When Did The Vietnam War Start

Posted by Seasonal Questions on Monday, March 13, 2023

The Vietnam War started in the 1950s, according to most historians, though the conflict in Southeast Asia had its roots in the French colonial period of the 1800s. The war was fought between communist North Vietnam, backed by the Soviet Union and China, and South Vietnam, supported by the United States. The conflict lasted from November 1st, 1955 to April 30th, 1975.

The Vietnam War was part of a larger regional conflict and a manifestation of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union and their respective allies. The war was also called the “American War” in Vietnam or in full, the “War Against the Americans to Save the Nation”.

The war had its roots in a struggle by nationalists after World War II to gain independence from France. The French were defeated at Dien Bien Phu in 1954 and withdrew from Vietnam. The country was then divided into two parts: North Vietnam and South Vietnam.

The North Vietnamese government wanted to reunite Vietnam under its rule and launched a guerrilla war against South Vietnam. The United States became involved in the conflict because it feared that if South Vietnam fell to communism, other countries in Southeast Asia would follow.

The United States sent troops to fight alongside South Vietnamese forces. The war was fought on many fronts: on land, at sea, and in the air. It was one of the most controversial wars in American history.
