The Black Death arrived in 1338 or 1339 near Issyk-Kul, a lake in a mountainous area just west of China in what is now Kyrgyzstan. It was the first and most severe manifestation of the second pandemic.

The Black Death reached England in June 1348. It was devastating global epidemic of bubonic plague that struck Europe and Asia in the mid-1300s. The plague arrived in Europe in October 1347 when 12 ships from the Black Sea docked at the Sicilian port of Messina.

The Black Death is widely believed to have been the result of plague, caused by infection with the bacterium Yersinia pestis. The bacterium is primarily spread by fleas that live on rats.
